Can I wear black to go to a wedding?
Dress code is a new culture people have just perceived in Vietnam. But the question of wearing black to go to a wedding has been around up to now.
Many hosts today will be specific about what wedding guests should wear in the invitation. And many couples choose black and white palette to be the theme of their celebration.
In Vietnam culture, black is not a biased color for dress code in a wedding. However, if you know how to mix and match, black will aid your elegance and highlight your best features.
How to dress black to go to a wedding
Black dresses to a wedding have their language. Your costume should reflect the season and wedding’s location. In many circumstances, you are likely to dress in the same colors as the bridesmaids.
Being a sophisticated wedding guest, choose your dress wisely. In particular, avoid too casual dressing such as wearing flip-flops, athleisure wear, or short.
It’s also inappropriate if you dress too sexy to the formal wedding ceremony because it’s supposed to happen in a respected place. If your dress exposes the shoulders, cover them with a scarf along with your arms.
Dressing to a wedding: Do’s and Don’ts
No white
Black is ok. But not white.
You should not wear white or any variation of white including ivory, cream, even slight nude.
No spikes
If you think of putting on a leather jacket with hard studs and edgy details, distinguish that idea. Instead, lean towards soft or glamorous such as dresses with patterns, colors, prints, and brights.
No informal club dress
A really tight short dress that seems not to be able to hold all of your cleavage and bum won’t do well at a wedding, especially a formal one. There will be a lot of families around the wedding. So, do keep your dress a bit on the conservative side.
Try floor-length dresses following the formal or black-tie notation on the invitation. Even if the card doesn’t say anything, you still need to respect the event.
No showing off undergarments
Don’t let your underwear show. Those include bra straps, the back of your bra, or panty lines.
There are lots of ways to conceal those outlines. You can look for underneath dresses, bra clips, or shaping shorts to hide your underwear seamlessly.
No jeans, denim, and leggings
Those are too casual looking. The great alternatives to that could be a pair of tailored pants, stockings, or tights.
If you’re not really into dresses or clothes that look too girly, you can go for jumpsuit or pantsuit. Match the costume with heels and accessories.
No last-minute shopping
Don’t wait until the last moment to pick up the dress. It’s better if you have a couple of dresses on hand to be ready for the wedding anytime.
You should think about preparing for wedding dressing at least a week before the day. Make sure you know the dress code (ask if you don’t) and follow the rules.
Bottom line
Black is no longer a controversial color for a wedding. It’s an acceptable choice of cloth to wear in such an event.
However, you should follow the dress code (if any) in the wedding invitation to avoid wandering from the subject.
Whatever you wear to the wedding, stick to the principle of being more dressy rather than too casual and exposed. You won’t be the star of the day, but you’ll have your own place to shine.
